Find Out MoreWe all have days when we feel mentally overloaded, emotionally flat or simply unlike ourselves.
It might come from stress, a busy schedule, too much time staring at a screen or a period where everything feels slightly harder than usual. When you feel that way, exercise may be the last thing you are in the mood for—but movement can also be one of the most effective ways to create a break in that feeling.
It does not have to solve everything. Sometimes, the benefit is simply having a moment where your attention moves away from your thoughts, your body wakes up and the day begins to feel a little different.
When your mind feels busy, continuing to sit and think about the same things does not always help. Movement gives you something else to focus on: your breathing, your coordination, the music or simply following the next step of a workout.
Research suggests that even one session can make a difference. A major review by researchers Julia Basso and Wendy Suzuki found that a single bout of exercise can increase positive feelings, reduce negative feelings and lower some of the psychological and physical responses associated with short-term stress.[1]
You do not necessarily need a long or extremely intense workout either. In one experiment, just 10 minutes of brisk walking improved participants’ mood compared with remaining inactive.[2]
That is useful to remember on days when 30 or 45 minutes feels unrealistic. A short session may still be enough to interrupt the slump, give you a change of focus and help you return to the rest of your day feeling slightly clearer.
The immediate effects of movement can look different for everyone.
You might feel:
This is one of the reasons enjoyable exercise matters. When a workout contains something you genuinely like—whether that is upbeat music, bouncing, learning new movements or joining familiar faces at a class—it can offer an emotional reward as well as a physical one.
Boogie Bounce can work particularly well as a mood-lifting option because you can choose the kind of experience you need. That might be an upbeat Boogie Bounce routine when you want to release energy, a class where you can enjoy the atmosphere and connect with other people, or a home session through the app or YouTube when you need some space to reset privately.
On lower-energy days, something gentler such as Basic Bounce or Bounce & Balance may feel more supportive than forcing yourself through a demanding workout.
Feeling like yourself again rarely comes from one perfect workout. It is more often something that develops as movement becomes a regular source of energy, confidence and routine.
A large observational study involving more than 1.2 million adults found that people who exercised reported around one and a half fewer poor mental-health days per month than people who did not exercise. Because the research was observational, it could not prove that exercise alone caused the difference, but it showed a strong relationship between activity and better self-reported mental health.[3]
Research involving people experiencing depression has also found meaningful benefits. A 2024 review examined 218 trials involving more than 14,000 participants and found that activities including walking or jogging, yoga and strength training could reduce depressive symptoms, although the researchers also noted limitations in the quality of some of the evidence.[4]
Exercise is not a replacement for professional support when someone is struggling with persistent or severe low mood. However, it can be a valuable part of looking after your mental wellbeing.
Regular movement can help restore some of the things that difficult periods often take away: structure, confidence, enjoyment, social connection and the sense that you are actively caring for yourself.
When your mood is low, the hardest part is often beginning. Instead of waiting to feel fully motivated, make the first step as small as possible.
You could:
It can also help to notice your mood before and after a session. You do not need to feel completely transformed. Feeling even slightly calmer, lighter or more energised is still valuable.
Not every mental reset needs to look the same.
Some days, you may want music, energy and a challenging workout that helps you release tension. On others, you may benefit more from gentle movement, balance work or a shorter routine that simply helps you reconnect with your body.
The most supportive approach is often to ask:
What kind of movement would help me today?
That creates a healthier relationship with exercise than treating every workout as something you must force yourself through.
Movement cannot remove every difficult thought or fix every stressful situation. But it can create space.
It can give your mind a break, lift your mood, reconnect you with other people and remind you what it feels like to use your body in a positive way.
Sometimes feeling more like yourself again begins with something very small: putting on the music, stepping onto the rebounder and giving yourself a few minutes to move.
You may finish in the same circumstances—but feeling a little more ready to face them.
